How does the indicator work?
The Q on the front of the machine acts as a light up speed indicator. The higher your speed, the more of the Q lights up!
What is the speed compared to the 16X Elite?
The 16X Manual runs a stitch speed of 1700 while the 16X Elite has a stitch speed of 2100. Both machines are very capable and very smooth, the 16X Elite does have more stitch modes, which might lend well to your needs, but the 16X Manual is great for those who want that manual control over their stitches.
Is 16 inches of throat space enough?
With a 16" throat space you can confidently quilt 12" blocks, which is one of the most common sizes. Rest assured that fabric bunching is a thing of the past. The ability to manage your fabric in this much throat space is a win as well!

If you are just learning to quilt with a longarm it is a great machine. There is no stitch regulation as it is a manual stitch machine. You have to learn how to regulate the size of your stitches with the movement of your hands on the machine. The speed at which the stitches are stitched coupled with the movement of the machine can be adjusted to get the size stitch you need per inch. I’d recommend getting the encoders to go with it or invest in the next step machine. Otherwise it’s a good investment. I think the ruler foot should be included as a standard part of the machine and it is not. Knowing what I know now, I would have purchased the ruler foot and the encoders at time of my purchase.
