Quilting Trend Forecast 2022
We’ve loved watching the evolution of quilting trends and traditions over the years. From new technology to new approaches to stitching, there’s no shortage of creativity in the quilting community. While many foundational principles of quilting are here to stay, we can’t help but smile at the awesome and inspiring things that quilters choose to do with their art.
So without further ado, we are here to present to you some of the inspiring quilting trends to try out in your quilting practice during 2022.
3 Quilting Trends for 2022
#1: Repurposing
Sustainability is a hot topic in many industries and quilting is no different!
A recent study by the UNEP revealed, “The fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for 8-10 percent of global carbon emissions - more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.” This is relevant to the quilting industry because quilters can make eco-friendly choices to combat climate change. Sustainability in quilting can be as simple as reusing fabric scraps for new projects, using clothing as quilting material, or giving a piece of clothing new life with quilted elements. Repurposing fabric tests your creative intelligence and opens up new avenues for your quilting skill to grow

The quilted advent calendar is another great way to use fabric scraps to create something amazing that the whole family will enjoy. Full tutorial here.
#2: Quilting in Fashion
Quilted clothing pieces are making a huge splash in the fashion industry. High-end retailers like Nordstrom, Free People, and Neiman Marcus are debuting lines with quilted jackets. As quilt lovers, we could not be happier about this.

If you’re looking to combine two of these trends, look no further. Repurpose unused fabric and refresh clothing items with this fun quilt panel. The Strip Quilted Jacket panel is a sustainable quilter’s dream! Creating a statement jacket like this requires scrap fabric, batting, a jacket, and a quilting machine.
A quick note: Apply this pattern to any piece of clothing you’d like to reinvent. We can see this quilted panel on sweaters, sweats, or any piece of clothing thick enough to support the design. If you do make a version of this quilted panel, please post your results on the Grace Company Facebook page!
This project is a quick way to inject personality into your wardrobe. If you want the full tutorial, you can find the written directions here.

#3: Quilting for a Cause
It’s a lovely thing when you can use your art to affect positive change. We’d like to highlight an organization near and dear to our hearts: Quilts of Valor. You might remember this organization if you’ve joined us for our quilting festivals. The Quilts of Valor Foundation has a heart-warming origin story that began in 2003 when, founder, Catherine Roberts’ son was deployed in Iraq.
“According to Catherine: The dream was as vivid as real life. I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had made this dramatic change.
The message of my dream was: Quilts = Healing.”
Since 2003, Quilts of Valor has passionately been embarking on its mission to provide comfort and healing warmth to service members and veterans who have been touched by war. That’s a cause we can get behind. You can donate a quilt to the cause today! Find more information about how to get involved on the Quilts of Valor website.
